🤍#Preventitdon’tforgetit 🤍 Cervical cancer 🤍#Preventitdon’tforgetit 🤍
Cervical cancer was once the leading causes of cancer death for women in the US but nowadays, thanks to screening and the HPV vaccine, it is the most preventable of female cancers.
.
🔬#Screening aims to detect precancerous changes, that may lead to cancer. Several tests can be used:
- Pap test: lab checks the sample for cancer cells or abnormal cells
- HPV test: lab checks for HPV infection.
Screening is mostly started from 25 years of age until 64 years, but Pap tests can be started earlier (e.g. 21 years), especially if women are sexually active.
.
💉According to WHO, the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer exists in 3 forms: bivalent, a quadrivalent, and a nonavalent vaccine. All three are highly efficacious in preventing infection with virus types 16 and 18, which are responsible for around 70% of cervical cancer cases globally. The vaccination schedule depends on the age of the recipient:
- Females <15 years: 2-dose schedule (0, 6 months)
- Females ≥15 years: 3-dose schedule (0, 2, 6 months)
.
💡#Didyouknow? Recently, males are also getting vaccinated against HPV because, apart from preventing HPV genital warts. It also seems to help decrease occurrence of HPV infection and subsequent cervical disease in women. #cervicalcancer #awareness #women #girl #pap #paptests #hpv #med #medicine #medstudent #medical

🇬🇧Hey everyone! Since unfortunately this ye 🇬🇧Hey everyone!
Since unfortunately this year we were unable to organise a Twinning, EMSA Yeditepe from the University of Istanbul has given us an interesting proposal:
E-TWINNING 2021! 🇹🇷

This would consist in some social programs like challenges (debates, cooking classes, quiz..), online city tours, online games, language course, and so on. Instead for the academic part, professors would give a lecture or show some surgical footage. Of course these are all preliminary ideas. We will do a poll on Instagram stories to understand how many students would actually be interested in attending.

Since, as we said, nothing has been decided, we do not know exactly how much time this will take up. At the moment, we were thinking just a few afternoons in the beginning of March, but of course we are happy to make changes according to the preferences of whoever takes part.

We think it’s a very nice idea in order to get to know EMSA Yeditepe while we wait for a proper exchange to be possible. Furthermore, we also believe it will be good for 1st year and 2nd year students in order to also get to know each other better since it has not been possible for them to actually meet.
We hope you’ll join us!❤️🇹🇷

🗣November is #PancreaticCancer awareness month! 🗣November is #PancreaticCancer awareness month!
Pancreatic Cancer became the second cause of all cancer-related deaths this year.
Why is pancreatic cancer so deadly?
Due to its subtle symptomatology, it can remain undetected for years leading to a very poor prognosis when the patients are actually diagnosed.

🤕It normally affects people over 65, and presents itself with stomach and mid-back pain, jaundice, unexplained weight loss, changes in stools, loss of appetite, indigestion as well as new-onset diabetes.
Pancreatic cancer shares symptoms with many other diseases, such as pancreatitis, gallstones, irritable bowel syndrome or hepatitis.

⁉️Pancreatic cancer is often idiopathic, but smoking, obesity, diabetes , inherited mutations or a family history may increase the likelihood of becoming ill, which is why there are now screening programs that help with early diagnosis.

✅What can you do to prevent it?
A healthy lifestyle goes a long way! Maintain a healthy weight, stop smoking and quit alcohol intake and if you belong to a high risk group make sure to undergo frequent checkups with your doctor!

💜In the meantime help spread knowledge using the following hashtags!

.
🌎The #25thNovember is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The premise of this day is to raise #awareness of the fact that women around the world are subject to #rape, domestic #violence and other forms of violence.
.
👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏽Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. According to a 2013 WHO global study, 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual violence. Some national studies show that up to 70 per cent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime from an intimate partner.
.
📈It is estimated that of the 87,000 women who were intentionally killed in 2017 globally, more than half by intimate partners or family members. In Italy it estimated that about 150 women are killed by a partner every year.
.
📌At least 200 million women and girls aged 15-49 have undergone female genital #mutilation in the 30 countries with representative data on prevalence. In most of these countries, the majority of girls were cut before age five.
.
🎥Movie suggestion: “Desert flower"
.
‼️ Eliminating such violence globally requires intensive effort from the government, institutions and associations. Women’s rights movements resulted in an increased understanding that violence against women is a violation of #HumanRights. However, there is still much to do and is fundamental today to raise awareness of this issue.

🚗#DriveSafely🚗 🛵Road safety week goes fro 🚗#DriveSafely🚗
🛵Road safety week goes from the 16th until the 22nd November, but this does not mean that after it we have to forget how to drive safely. Driving safely protects both you and other people on the road.
.
ℹ️The most common causes of accidents in the US are:
* Distracted driving. Talking and texting on the phone is the most common distraction.
* Drunk driving. The limit in Italy is an alcohol blood level of 0,5g/L, which corresponds to the level a 70kg man has after drinking a double malt beer.
* Breaking the speed limits. Therefore, this year’s theme is ‘No need to speed’.
* Reckless driving.
* Driving in bad weather conditions.
* Not stopping while the red light is running.
.
💡#Didyouknow? Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in drunk-driving accidents. They cause the loss of more than 10,000 lives per year.

🎀 TITTIES UP 🎀 #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth . 🎀 TITTIES UP 🎀 #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth
.
📊 Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 #women, being the most common cancer in women in all age groups. In many cases, however, it can be prevented or diagnosed at a very early stage thanks to prevention and #early detection tests. Indeed, about 9 in 10 women (87 percent) are alive 5 years after breast cancer diagnosis!
.
🩺 HOW TO PREVENT IT?
- Lifestyle habits: follow a healthy diet (less animal fats and alcohol, more fruit and vegetables), do more physical activity, stop smoking.
- From 20 to 40 y/o: annual specialist visit + #selfexamination, instrumental exams only in case of familiarity and a palpable nodule.
- From 40 to 50 y/o: mammography if familiarity with breast cancer, preferably combined with #ultrasound due to the dense structure of the breast in fertile age.
- From 50 to 70 y/o: biennial #mammography. These are the years in which the risk of cancer is higher!
.
🧬 In women positive to the #genetic test for BRCA1 or 2, in addition to the mammography and the clinic visits, an annual #MRI is also indicated.
